Currency Exchange programming and projects are an investment in the social fabric of the communities it serves.

In addition to inviting exhibiting artists to host their own workshops, projects, and programming, CXLA presents ongoing programs alongside its exhibition schedule that transform the gallery—and the art within it—into a space for community gathering and exchange.

CXLA also hosts and supports independent social practice initiatives and community-based projects.

  • Community Feeds are shared meals that mark the closing of each exhibition. Rooted in the belief that food is a universal connector, these gatherings bring artists, neighbors, residents, and visitors together to exchange ideas and build community. All are welcome. Food is always free.

  • Presented in collaboration with Transformation Arts and the Agape Artist Residency, Beauty Salon builds on the creative energy of artists and communities coming together to foster dialogue and collective care. Through workshops, civic frameworks, and collaborative design sessions, participants explore how art can help shape more just and connected futures—moving beyond interpreting the present to envision and prototype alternative models for public life.

  • During every exhibition, we transform the gallery into a karaoke stage. Come prepared to sing your heart out!

  • A community organizing initiative developed with our neighbors to strengthen connections between residents, businesses, artists, and organizations along the West Washington corridor.

  • A series of neighborhood zines highlighting the businesses, people, places, and stories that make up Mid-City and the communities surrounding Currency Exchange.

  • Conceived in response to feedback from Washington Crossing residents, who expressed a desire to see more care given to their shared spaces, including the lobby and plantings, the project is an ongoing workshop series hosted by CXLA that invites residents to create collaborative artworks to be installed on the lobby walls, replacing the existing commercial art.
